Dead Weight 04:06
It’s echo street all the way Past la vaquita by the freeway Feeling like it’s a mistake You and I can’t change things I used to think we were ok Now you talk the cruelest You make it your own way And you leave me to Carry the dead weight Just a couple kids from the red clay We used to have fun That’s what we’d say I didn’t mean to push you so far You and I can’t change things I used to think we were ok Now you don’t do you You make it your own way And you leave me to Carry the dead weight You talk the cruelest You make it your own way And you leave me to Carry the dead weight It’s just space And falling slowly into it It’s just space You were someone I could hold onto Weightless It’s echo street all the way Past the ymca Feeling like it’s a mistake Being seen in your own way I used to think we were ok Now you don’t do you You make it your own way And you leave me to Carry the dead weight You talk the cruelest You make it your own way You leave me to Carry the dead weight I’ll be seeing you around What does your heart say now

Out on the rocky cliff Staring out to begin Smell of the brackish wind Take it with you and let’s get in Are we just having fun Either way I may run Away from something I depend The water’s cold until you swim Take it with you and let’s get in Sea sand and stars Circling back on the dock Your eyes in the fading light What am I gonna do The deepest blue Swimming sand and stars Circling back on the dock Your eyes in the fading light What am I gonna do The deepest blue In the cove where the bells sound There’s a few fisherman Last days of summer amen Take it with you and lets get in Green grass on the hill The seagulls are loud and shrill Here in Cape Elizabeth The water’s cold until you swim Take it with you and let’s get in

I don’t believe in you Some others do Floating in the blue Highland Avenue Pen knife you carved our names A.R. forever D.J. I don’t believe in you Some others do Trains pulling the freight Sweeping out my room Floating in the lake Without you You won’t believe where I am You should see it out here Someday I don’t believe in fate Some others do Floating in the blue Highland Avenue Suddenly a thought pierces you And I get so sad Cause we’re through I don’t believe in you Some others do

Letdown 02:51
We know it now when we’re out walking around Waiting in lines checked out I know it sucks when you’re coming down Thinking maybe it’s over And it’s gonna be a letdown There’s a trail we can take Winter stars a stomach ache Then I get on down my way Couple of wrinkled shirts in a bag waking up in LA Thinking maybe it’s over and it’s gonna be a letdown In the quiet secret night Who you are you do not know We walk slow with our hands in our pockets And for a long time we talked Til you became a legend And your breathing timeless I know it sucks when you first find out Mornings are colder In our town Baby it’s over and it’s gonna be a letdown

I see you hiding in there Behind your art piece life shit Nearly lost everything If I could only open my mouth Why must we always give in Half strangled like this Clear blue sky Babe I could just die Cold morning light I may never know why Lonely satellite Never next time Cigarette smoke haze Hung around our heads In an ancient hotel bar I let my guard down Haven’t laughed so hard in years I dive I swim I float Clear blue sky Babe I could just die Cold morning light I may never know why Lonely Satellite Never next time We slept with the window open We could see the boats coming in We watched the fireworks go out Wake up it’s time to leave And stand on the sidewalk alone Why must we always give in It’s useless not wanting you Clear blue sky Babe I could just die Cold morning light May never know why My pathetic heart No way to say goodbye Lonely satellite Never next time

Free Rein 02:51
If you see my raven haired girl down by the Eno bank Singing songs in the North Carolina way A few crooked teeth A few dreams delayed Steady yourself babe Free Rein Coastal byways with the wind at your face Travel the cosmos to find your place And it’s brilliant getting lost along the way Steady yourself babe Free rein Fog drifts below the mountain range Dogs barking tethered on a chain When you’re alone out in the freezing rain When you lose your way Choking on the dust of what you wanna say Sweeping out the days Torn away Deep into a corner you no longer relate When you feel your plan’s in vain Steady yourself babe When you feel your heart hesitate Steady yourself babe When you lose your way Sweet as sugar cane When you need a hand They look the other way Free rein

Along the outskirts Looking up at a cold new world You beat yourself up back there So you cross the razor’s edge You’re gonna lose everything Just gain a vision Of a dream of a love of a light that can’t be named And the wind’s always blowing in your face There’s a train tumbling to another place If you saw me walking by You’d ask yourself why How did we get through that We didn’t belong there Just a couple of kids dreaming And hurting in New York City Minds lost in the haze Machines thrashing for days Progress is always fleeting My pathetic heart keeps beating Honey’s broken on the bowery And it’s raining in Brooklyn Turn out the light and just keep walking And the wind’s always blowing in your face There’s a plane flying to another place If you saw me walking by You’d ask yourself why How did we get through that We didn’t belong there Just a couple of kids dreaming And hurting in New York City In a tear stained voice hardly mine No gracefulness no thoughtful charm So adrift A sharper emptiness On the outskirts Looking up at a cold new world You beat yourself up back there Now the gypsy’s laughing You cant stop whats happened And you close the door to a room You spent your city life in If you saw me walking by You’d ask yourself why How did we get through that We didn’t belong there Just a couple of kids drinking And hurting in New York City Just a couple of kids dreaming

I met her at the reynard She was pouring coffees I’m feeling scarred Red blouse lipstick to match Cold rose glass Green eyes so deep I’m blown away Can hardly breathe Sun cast shadows cold may morning Through tall cafe windows I don’t need to save you You don’t have to love me You just have to see me I’m your baby Put five dollars in the jukebox I don’t know where I’m going I’ve seen what people can do To the beauty in my dreams Last two cigarettes Don’t save anything Imperfections beguiling You ain’t going home yet I don’t need to save you You don’t have to love me You just have to see me I’m your baby Sparrow in her mouth You’re all I think about now

I’m never gonna get it Scared me what I need But you’re free now babe Driving away from me now Sunglasses on Windows down alone This is goodbye It scared me What I need I’m never gonna get it I was weak with longing I was in mid air Didn’t I do ya babe Something that I whispered in your ear that day We were on our way This is goodbye It scared me What I need I’m ever gonna get it What I need It scared me And Im never gonna get it

Distant lights The snow bashed streets Ticket for the turnpike Slap of the wiper blades My fortune’s my reflection In Lake Pontchartrain I’m getting back to it now Headed south to find out Frost on the windshield Aftermath mix tape Dead highway flowers Slowly changing lanes Blackberry pie Don’t it taste great And I’m getting back to it now I’m headed south to find out Under spanish moss My love awaits Goodbye Maria My one true saint And all the beautiful songs There was no other way My fortune’s my reflection In Lake Pontchartrain And I’m getting back to it now I’m headed south to find out Getting back to it now I’m headed south to find out

about

A quiet tempest in sound and sentiment alike, North Carolina-based songwriter Darren Jessee’s sophomore album Remover is stirringly tender and gorgeously cinematic. From the opening acoustic strums of “Dead Weight” to the mournful strings of closer “Getting Back to It Now” the album is bathed in an ever present emotional gravity all woven into a tapestry of elegant and unforgettable melody.

Produced by Alan Weatherhead (Sparklehorse, Daniel Johnston) with string arrangements from Richmond, VA Spacebomb’s Trey Pollard.

The vinyl LP was released by TurnFables Records (turnfables.bandcamp.com)
